The University of Central Missouri’s bachelor of science in Digital Media Production has a strong focus on production and teaching digital natives how to write, edit, produce and publish communication that is of professional-level substance and quality for today’s converged media. Students completing this program will be able to write like a professional for all media platforms and produce professional-level content for audio, visual, print, film and the Web. The tightly structured core of courses walks the DMP major through crucial developmental skills and provides the intellectual underpinnings of this vast and ever-changing digital world. The program requires 25 hours of core courses and allows the student to select an area of emphasis in audio, video, film, or news. Each of the areas of emphasis requires 18 hours of coursework, leaving 22 hours of free electives. The program does not require a minor, but completing one is recommended. The DMP student has access to state-of-the-art digital video and audio studios, and can participate in two news outlets: an online community newspaper, the digitalBurg, and a weekly newspaper, The Muleskinner. Both news outlets provide paid writing, editing, and sales positions for students throughout the year. Particularly exciting is the new UCM Media Network that allows students to shoot live University athletic events, do play-by-play and color commentary for the games, and edit for archival storage. Advertising sales positions are optional. The courses in the DMP allow students to learn to apply their skills at two successful news outlets, as well as step into professional-level sports streaming. Frankly, graduates can no longer learn on the job in our digital media world; they have to have media skills to offer their employer and they have to be prepared to think on their feet so that they adapt quickly to the digital media environment. The DMP provides all of that and more. For more information or to speak with a faculty member, contact the Digital Media Production Program Coordinator Joe Moore: email@example.com.
